Grounding, or earthing, is the simple act of connecting to the Earth.
When you are grounded, you are able to absorb the earth’s healing electrons. These electrons have an extraordinary ability to reduce inflammation, lower stress levels, improve sleep quality, relieve pain and stiffness, improve circulation, decrease depression and anxiety, increase energy, speed up metabolism and wound healing, and more. The health implications are exponential to your well-being.
The best news is that grounding is free! Just sit or stand with your feet in direct physical contact with Earth’s surface. Grass, sand, dirt, or concrete (not asphalt) will work. If you’re in the sun or ocean water, it’s even more effective.
But, if you are like many and can’t go outside walking barefoot every day, you can still enjoy the benefits of Earth’s energy by using a grounding mat in your home or office. And once you feel the tangible effects, you may even want to up your game by sleeping on an earthing mat.
In this article, we will explore 13 of the many health benefits of a grounding mat.
What are 13 Health Benefits of a Grounding Mat?
1.) Reduces Inflammation (including chronic inflammation)
Over 20 years of research and worldwide human-subject feedback show reduction—and frequently elimination—of chronic inflammation. Earth it seems, is the only pain medicine we need.
Free radicals are molecules that strip electrons from healthy tissue, resulting in damage. Billions of FRs are produced every day in our cells. Grounding brings free electrons into the human body where they neutralize FRs, reinforcing the immune system as the body absorbs the electrons.
2.) Speeds Up Wound Healing
Infrared imaging in peer-reviewed studies (NIH) show rapid recovery in serious wounds using sleep mats and grounding patches, with results varying from 2 days to (90% recovery in subjects at) 12 weeks. It also cited great results in chronic non-healing wounds in diabetic patients. Simplifying their summary: during grounding electrons create an antioxidant environment as they move around the injury, slowing and/or preventing damage to healthy tissue and forming a barricade to inflammation. This allows the body to heal itself faster and speeds healing of wounds.
20 Medical Thermography Case Studies
Dr. William Amalu, President of the International Academy of Clinical Thermography, conducted 20 clinical thermography case studies to determine grounding’s effect on inflammation, pain, and circulation in 20 of his patients.
3.) Better Sleep Quality and Less Fatigue
A study on the effects of grounding from PubMed shows that using grounding sleep mats for as little as four weeks lessened sleep disruptions, as well as decreased fatigue, and allowed participants to sleep longer and wake feeling more rested. Good sleep, of course, helps lower states of depression, stress, and pain. NIH studies also showed improvement in sleep apnea conditions.
4.) Improves Cortisol Levels (Better Sleep, Less Pain, Stress Reduction)
Measurable changes in cortisol profiles from 8 weeks of grounding during sleep at night resulted in improvements in sleep, pain, and stress (anxiety, depression, irritability) according to a PubMed article. Saliva tests were used to establish baseline cortisol levels and taken again every 4-hour intervals for an initial 24-hour period, then again at 6 weeks.
The tests showed cortisol levels were significantly reduced during night-time sleep, with reductions or elimination of sleep dysfunction, pain, and stress, in the majority of the subjects.
5.) Pain Reduction Related to Sports Injuries
A delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) study showed an improved immune system and reduction of pain from grounding practices. With a 10% or more improvement in the pain scale measurements of creatine kinase, white blood cells, bilirubin, and neutrophils. Grounding significantly reduced muscle damage and DOMS and shortened the duration of pain.
6.) Enhance Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
Improvements in HRV with the use of earthing mats, especially for long periods such as during a full sleep cycle, can reduce emotional stress, fear, anxiety, and other symptoms of autonomic dysfunction, restoring mental and physical well-being and helping to maintain that balance.
Ultimate Longevity Sleep Mat
The most important time to ground is when you sleep.
That’s why indoor grounded sleeping devices were either the only or the primary grounding devices used in almost all of the clinical research studies done on grounding the human body for health.

7.) Vagal Tone
The PNS (parasympathetic nervous system relaxes your body after danger or stress. Increasing your vagal tone activates the PNS. Grounding affects autonomic balance and improves VT which corresponds to an improvement in stress-resilience.
8.) Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
Shift From a Sympathetic (Fight or Flight) to a Parasympathetic (Relaxed) State
Our ANS is linked to our stress response. In recent studies overseen by the Biomedical Research Institute of America, grounded subjects demonstrated a reduction in stress and a quantization of the ANS function.
Balancing the stressed “fight or flight” area of the ANS with grounding produced clinical outcomes for stress reduction.
9.) Rheumatoid Arthritis
While sleeping grounded, some subjects in an NIH study had significant relief from rheumatoid arthritis. Increasingly, scientists and researchers are proving how simply connecting to the Earth’s energy can stabilize our internal bioelectrical environment helping to equalize malfunctioning body systems. The same study cited the benefits of grounding on other autoimmune issues such MS and lupus.
There is some evidence that earthing may help relieve symptoms of PMS. One study found that women who grounded themselves for 30 minutes every day experienced a significant improvement in PMS symptoms, including mood swings, food cravings, and bloating. It is thought that earthing may help relieve PMS symptoms by normalizing the body’s natural rhythms and restoring balance to the nervous system.

The Ground Therapy Universal Mat is the perfect all-purpose mat. Place it under your desk; then connect by putting your bare feet on it. But don’t stop there; you can use this mat for ‘everything’!
11.) Improve Blood Flow and Blood Viscosity
One study found that earthing improved blood flow by reducing viscosity and increasing erythrocyte deformability. This was likely due to grounding’s ability to reduce inflammation and improve endothelial function. Another study showed that earthing improved blood viscosity by reducing plasma viscosity and red cell aggregation decreasing oxidative stress and improving antioxidant status.
12.) Regulate Blood Glucose Level
One small study found that earthing for eight hours overnight improved blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity in people with diabetes. Another study showed that earthing may help to improve blood sugar levels in people with prediabetes. While more research is needed, there is some evidence to suggest that earthing may be beneficial for blood sugar regulation.
13.) Chronic Illnesses
Earthing has been shown to help with chronic illnesses, such as arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease, by reducing inflammation, improving sleep quality, and reducing stress levels. It can also help to regulate the body’s circadian rhythm and improve blood circulation.
There is growing evidence that earthing may improve chronic pain, fatigue, and quality of life in patients with fibromyalgia and reduce inflammation in people with rheumatoid arthritis.

Grounding, or Earthing, is a practice that has been used for centuries to improve health. I have been grounding for over a decade and my life is vibrant and healthy and full of energy and joy. I get to the beach as often as possible or sit on my front (concrete) porch. But, with a busy life, two kids, and a business, my best time grounding is when I sleep. I’ve slept on the Ultimate Longevity sleep mat for over a year and it has been life-changing. I won’t sleep without it.
I hope this information helps you to improve your health and life also!
